The Health Research Innovation Centre (HRIC) project consists of the development and construction of two interrelated buildings, the HRIC Lab and the HRIC Teaching, Research and Wellness Building (TRW).
The Lab will house a five-story research facility, anchored on each end by office and support space. Wet labs (e.g. chemistry, biology, etc.) will occupy the majority of the research area, and each of the five floors have been designed to accommodate full interstitial space between them, allowing for easier access to, and development of, mechanical and electrical infrastructure.
The TRW is a seven-story facility that will house clinics (patient care), offices and dry lab (e.g. computer) research components. The first five floors of the TRW will connect directly to the Lab building, and will literally be used to facilitate the translation of research from our laboratory benches to patient bedsides.
Both structures will also physically and functionally connect to the existing Health Sciences Centre and Heritage Medical Research Building, (which also connect to the Foothills Hospital complex) at the Faculty of Medicine.

Activities within the HRIC will be based upon a transdisciplinary model that will be greatly enhanced through orienting research groups and related clinical practices within newly developed Institutes (link word to Institutes page). Institutes will be created in areas where the Faculty of Medicine has already achieved internationally recognized strength. By creating these Institutes, we will be better positioned to foster continued research growth, while also helping to enhance and improve clinical care, education and other health resources in the community and throughout Southern Alberta. The HRIC will play a critical role in attracting and retaining some of the world's best researchers to the University of Calgary. The progressive atmosphere provided by the HRIC will foster interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers, clinicians and educators throughout the University, province and beyond – significantly advancing Alberta's international research reputation. |
