Program Outline
The specialty program in Endocrinology and Metabolism (E&M) at the University of Calgary enrolled its first resident in July 1981. Nineteen fellows have trained in this program since 1981. In 1985 the RCPSC began certification of specialty education in E &M by Canadian Universities, including the University of Calgary.

The educational philosophy of our program is to respect the requirements and career aspirations of the individual resident. We have a long tradition of outstanding ambulatory clinical experiences, close affiliation with Pediatric Endocrinology, and a variety of elective rotations to meet individual preferences.

The basic program is two years with the first year predominately clinical in focus. The second year emphasizes academic pursuits such as research and special clinical electives. Research is facilitated by the U of C Diabetes and Endocrine Research Group, an affiliate of the Division of E&M. Support for research beyond the core second year, such as for a University degree, is available from external funding agencies on a competitive basis.
