Program Outline
The majority of the resident's training will take place at the Foothills Medical Centre with the PGY-1 training occurring at the Rockyview Hospital and the pediatric radiology rotations occurring at the Alberta Children's Hospital. Elective training in both rural and urban centres in Alberta, other provinces, and the United States may be allowed. All residents are encouraged to attend the six week Pathology/Radiology course at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) in Washington,DC.
PGY-1
The PG-1 program is designed to provide a broad background in clinical medicine. This training will facilitate not only the candidate's preparation for the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination, but will also serve to develop the extensive core knowledge required in the role as a consultant Radiologist. Rotations consist of 4 weeks of diagnostic radiology, pulmonary medicine, ICU, emergency medicine, orthopedic medicine, pediatrics, and an elective as well as 8 weeks of general internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, and general surgery.
PGY-2 to 5
The program encompasses all areas of imaging. Specifically the residency is designed in block rotations of one to three months duration through PGY-2 to PGY-5. A minimum of six months training in ultrasound, three months training in nuclear medicine, three months in MRI, and three months in pediatric radiology are established. Interventional neuroradiology, mammography, chest, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, genitourinary, computerized tomography, and research blocks are part of the core program.
Seminars and Rounds
There is an introductory lecture series for PGY-2 residents in July and August. As well there are daily noon-hour rounds, weekly didactic half-day sessions and a well established visiting professor program.
Research
All PGY-2 residents are involved in one audit project. One additional research project leading to either a presentation at a recognized national or international meeting or a publication in a refereed journal is mandatory during the residency. A research block rotation is established.
