Canadian Applicants

Definitions:

Residents are enrolled in a primary specialty or subspecialty program for the full duration of the program.

Fellows are enrolled in a short-term specialized training program.

Applying for Residency Training

Canadian citizens and permanent residents graduating from Canadian medical schools must apply through the R1 match of the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS). 
CaRMS also has an R4 match for Internal Medicine residents who will start subspecialty training in 2010 and for Pediatrics residents who will start subspecialty training in 2011.

Canadian citizens studying in medical schools outside Canada are advised that only those enrolled in LCME-accredited schools may apply through the CaRMS Match. Those enrolled in schools not accredited by LCME must apply through the AIMG Program. There are no other routes of entry for Canadians to residency positions at the University of Calgary.

Electives  at the University of Calgary are available for residents who are currently enrolled in training programs accredited by the RCPSC or the CFPC. Residents should contact the applicable Residency Training Program to arrange their electives.

Fellowships at the University of Calgary are available for candidates who already have Canadian certification and wish to apply for short-term specialized training that will not lead to certification.

NEW!  English Proficiency National Standards
Physicians who have graduated or trained with the following Universities will be required to provide a letter with evidence of English language proficiency according to Canadian standards:
• University of Laval
• Sherbrook University
• University of Montreal

ELECTIVES ONLY- if the physician elective is longer than 90 days the English testing is required. Anything shorter than 90 days will not need the testing
