Psychiatry Online Literature Review Course

The Psychiatry Online Literature Review Course is run using a collegial journal club format. It is a convenient method for psychiatrists to review journal articles and their relation to practice with other psychiatrists from the familiarity of their own office or home computer.

How is it delivered:

The course is delivered using the web-based discussion forum on the University of Calgary's Blackboard system. Participants require access to a computer with an Internet connection. Blackboard access is password controlled and all discussions are kept strictly confidential.

What will be covered
:

Topics and articles are chosen based on the suggestions and needs assessments of registered participants.  Participants will be able to access and download the articles studied online. Staff from the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Calgary, will facilitate each online discussion. The literature review course offers an introductory conference and five consecutive online journal article conferences five to six weeks each. Each conference has 4 articles covering different topics and you can join any or all of them.

What CME credit you will receive:

Participants will receive 2 Section-1 CPD credit hours for the introductory conference and 3 Section-1 CPD credit hours for each online article discussion in which they participate. This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. This program has been reviewed and approved/co-sponsored by Continuing Medical Education and Professional Development, University of Calgary. Participants can claim up to a maximum of 62 study credits.

Time Commitment:

Four discussions are held during each conference, and each conference runs for five to six weeks. Participants can log-on to post comments at anytime from anywhere when it is most convenient to read the comments of others and to post contributions to the discussion. To get maximum benefit from the discussions, active participation (e.g. logging-on about twice a week) is recommended to ensure sufficiently in-depth discussion develops. However, a minimum of two postings in a 5 week discussion period are required to receive credit for that discussion.

Participants can register and join the course at any time during the year.  The cost of the course is pro-rated according to the date of registration.
