Dr. Maria Bacchus named Interim Joint Head for Department of Medicine

Dr. C. Maria Bacchus has been named Interim Joint Head of the Department of MedicineDr. Francois Belanger, Zone Medical Director, Calgary Zone, Alberta Health Services and Dr. Tom Feasby, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, The University of Calgary are pleased to announce that Dr. Maria Bacchus has been appointed to  the role of Interim Joint Department Head for the Department of Medicine effective July 1, 2010.

Dr. C. Maria Bacchus completed her Medical Degree, Internal Medicine Residency, and MSc in Clinical Epidemiology and Health Care Research at the University of Toronto.

From 1998 to 2004 she was appointed to various leadership roles within the University Health Network, University of Toronto including Head of General Internal Medicine, Program Director for the Core Internal Medicine Training Program, and Medical Program Director Community and Population Health Program.

In 2005 she moved to Calgary and was appointed as Vice Chair of Strategic Planning and Clinical Affairs, for the Department of Medicine as well has serving as Departmental Site Chief and as Site Chief for General Internal Medicine at the Foothills Medical Center. She is currently the Medical lead for the South Health Campus planning team and an Associate Professor of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine University of Calgary.

Dr. Bacchus’ interests are in educational assessment, medical simulation and strategic planning.  She is presently the Chair of the Internal Medicine Exam Board for the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada and the Vice President of Education for the Canadian Society of Internal Medicine.
