Dr. William (Bill) GhaliI am pleased to announce that Dr. William Ghali, MD, MPH, FRCPC, has been named director of the Calgary Institute for Population and Public Health, effective July 1, 2010.
Currently a professor in the Departments of Medicine and Community Health Sciences, Ghali’s new role will allow him to link together members in the Institute who have similar research interests and foster team initiatives. He also plans to take the Institute’s research and align it with provincial partners and decision makers as the research has direct applications.
Dr. Ghali received his medical degree from the University of Calgary in 1990 and went on to complete his residency in Internal Medicine at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Upon his return to the University of Calgary in 1996, Ghali was made an assistant professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine and was an active member of the medical community. He was promoted to associate professor in 2000 and to the level of professor in 2005.
Dr. Ghali has been honoured with several awards and distinctions for his career achievements in research. These include the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada Visiting Professorship in Medical Research, a place on Canada’s Top 40 under 40 list, and the Award of Excellence in Teaching from the University of Calgary. He also holds a Canada Research Chair in Health Services Research and is an Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research Senior Health Scholar (now Alberta Innovates–Health Solutions). Dr. Ghali continues to hold membership on several local and national committees and has published in excess of 250 peer-reviewed manuscripts and over 155 abstracts.
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Ghali to his new leadership role in the Faculty of Medicine.
