HEALING THE GAP: UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY MEDICAL STUDENTS HOST 1st ANNUAL “RICH MAN POOR MAN” EVENT TO RAISE FUNDS FOR THE CALGARY DROP-IN CENTRE STUDENT RUN MEDICAL CLINIC
University of Calgary Medical Students will host a RICH MAN POOR MAN dinner on November 12, 2009 - an evening of food, entertainment, a silent auction and guest speaker Sam Kolias. All proceeds will benefit a new Student Run Medical Clinical at the Calgary Drop-In Centre.
A RICH MAN POOR MAN dinner offers a taste of the low-income reality that many in our city face. As an attendee, guests will have a one in eight chance of receiving the RICH MAN meal, while the remainder of the guests will be eating a POOR MAN’s meal. Both dinners will be followed by a dessert buffet with coffee and tea.
Our guest speaker this year, Sam Kolias, is Chairman and CEO of Boardwalk Rental Communities and Board Member of the Calgary Homeless Foundation. He will be sharing his perspectives on homelessness and poverty in Calgary. The event will also feature a silent auction, door prizes and a cash bar.
The group of Calgary Medical Students aims to raise $10,000 or more in order to implement a student-run medical clinic at the Calgary Drop-In Centre. With only one part-time physician, the Student-Run Medical Clinic will help provide more access to basic healthcare needs for the underserved clients of the Calgary Drop-In Centre.
The Calgary Drop-In Centre is the largest homeless centre in North America, housing over 1250 people every night. It is run almost exclusively by private donations and works “to prevent homelessness where possible, offer care and shelter when needed, and provide opportunities for people to rehabilitate and rebuild their lives.”
Tables are available for $520 (8/table). Tickets are $75/ individual.
