AIHS Studentships

Important Changes:

  • New Rules:

There is no limit on the number of times a student can apply.

The subject of the research must fall within the broad areas listed on page 11 of the graduate studentship application. Note that these new research classifications are based on the Government’s Alberta's Health Research and Innovation Strategy. The classifications used in the Strategy document are possibly not what you are used to. In order to identify the appropriate research subject area, find out where your best fit is by looking in Appendix C of the Strategy document.

  • New Application Review Process:

The Pro-Grid system of ranking is no longer used by AIHS. Instead, the trainee applicant is central to the application.

  • New Sections in the Graduate Studentship Application:

Accomplishments (page 4)
Career development plan (page 5)
Mentorship Advisory Committee (page 7)
Mentoring Plan (page 10)

Medicine GSE internal review/support process and timeline:

In order to enhance the chances of success for your application, the GSE Office will make available to you an internal, iterative review/support process for the sections of the application that did not exist under AHFMR. First of all, visit the AIHS website for Graduate Student Trainees and familiarize yourself with the new “Graduate Studentship Application” document (click on the “Apply” button on that page to get the document).

A word about the co-mentor and career advisor:

  • Co-mentor:

The role of the co-mentor is not fundamentally different from the primary research supervisor. AI-HS encourages that the individual serving in this role brings a different perspective and thus will help the student consider both the research that the student is engaged in and the student’s career path from different vantage points.

  • Career advisor:

The role of the career advisor is focused on the career plan and the decision making process that supports the development of the career path of the student.

For both roles:

For individuals that are not in an academic setting, the submitted resume should provide reviewers with a sense of what they bring in terms of experience. Both need to sign off on the first page of the graduate student application.

Application Deadlines and Required Information for the Internal Review/Support Process:

    • page 5: describe your career objectives (couple of sentences)
    • page 7: suggestions for names of potential co-mentors and career advisors (the reason for each)

MD/PhD studentship applications:

The new criteria and new information are also required for MD/PhD applications. Applicants to MD/PhD studentships are invited to use the internal, iterative review/support process described above. The Mentorship Plan and choice for co-mentor and career advisor should be linked to the development plan appropriate for a career as clinician-scientist.

If you have any further questions, please contact Linka van As in the Graduate Science Education office at (403) 220-5712 or vanas@ucalgary.ca.
