Alberta Innovates - Health Solutions is presenting In the Family
Wednesday, October 6, 2010,
6:30 p.m. at the Plaza Theatre, 1133 Kensington Road N.W., Calgary.
In the Family is a thought-provoking documentary that follows 31-year-old film maker Joanna Rudnick in her journey as she undergoes predictive genetic testing to determine if she is at risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers. Armed with a positive genetic test result that leaves her essentially "a ticking time bomb", she balances dreams of having her own children with the unnerving reality that she is risking her life by holding onto her fertility.
Stephanie Desmarais, a genetic counsellor from the Dr. R. Brian Lowry Genetics Clinic at the Alberta Children's Hospital will introduce the film.
Following the movie, Ms. Desmarais will lead a discussion on the latest practices in genetic counselling and genetic testing. "Genetic counsellors are healthcare professionals with specialized training in medical genetics and counselling," says Desmarais. "As genetic counselors, our role is to help individuals and families make informed medical and personal decisions by providing information about the nature, inheritance, and implications of genetic disorders, and discussing potential psychological implications and ethical issues that may arise with genetic testing."
"This Science in the Cinema program is part of our ongoing focus on science education, inviting people around the province - especially young people - to enjoy an evening at the movies and to learn about on-the-ground health research in Alberta," says Alberta Innovates - Health Solutions CEO Jacques Magnan, PhD. "Our thanks go out to the health experts, physicians and scientists who have been sharing their considerable expertise with Albertans."
