Bacteria: Bane, Boon or Both?

This month, Science Café speakers will explore both the good and bad sides of bacteria. According to the presenters, bacteria are not simply the purveyors of disease-bacteria also helps to treat or cure many life threatening diseases.

During October's Science Café, speakers Dr. Rebekah DeVinney and Dr. Anthony Schryvers will refer to the work of Gairdner and Nobel prize winning scientist Dr. Barry Marshall, which led to the discovery that bacteria cause gastric ulcer disease. Also to be discussed is the fact that bacteria can teach us a great deal about our own cells, as Gairdner prize winner Lucy Shapiro has shown in her studies of cell development.

Science Café is a place where, for the price of a cup of coffee or a pint of beer, anyone can join discussions that explore the latest ideas in science and technology.
