Emergency Response Plans

Emergency Response Procedures: University of Calgary, South Campus

Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine

Employee and Contractor Responsibilities:

To ensure readiness in case of an emergency, all employees, contractors, students and other occupants (i.e. employees of CHR working in the clinics) shall do the following:

  • Read and understand this procedure.
  • Survey the area and know where the nearest emergency exits, escape routes and safety equipment are located.
  • Know which machines and equipment need to be to shut off, and any laboratory procedures that need to be shut down prior to leaving the area.
  • If hazardous chemicals are used and stored in your area, take a printed up-to-date inventory with you for responding to emergency personnel.
  • Ensure all doors are closed when evacuating an area.
  • Know the location of your assembly area, as identified by your supervisor.
  • Ensure all aisles are kept clear from obstruction to allow free movement of people in an evacuation and free access of emergency equipment.
  • If any aisles are blocked, or other hazards exist, report this immediately to your supervisor.
  • If a building or buildings are in alarm, all faculty, staff and students are expected to proceed quickly and safely to their nearest immediate exit. All are also expected to then rendezvous at one of three designated assembly areas.

Please note, all must exit the buildings in alarm and then enter the assembly points through an exterior atrium door. The doors connecting the HRIC and HSC atriums are not to be used in an alarm situation.

  • HRIC Lab and TRW evacuees are to assemble in the Health Sciences Centre/Heritage Medical Research Building (HSC/HMRB) atrium and await further instruction.
  • HSC/HMRB evacuees are to assemble in the HRIC atrium (part of the Lab building) and await further instruction.
  • If all four buildings are in alarm, evacuees must leave through the nearest exit and assemble at the exterior Lot 6 and await further instruction.

Assembling at the designated locations:

  • ensures the University can fulfill its legal obligation to account for the occupants of the buildings in alarm;
  • makes it possible for emergency response personnel and U of C emergency responders to contact individuals that may have specific knowledge about certain locations and potential hazards within those locations; and
  • allows communication to all building occupants about the emergency and when occupants can expect to be able to return to their workplace.

Follow all instructions provided by your fire warden, manager or delegate and emergency personnel.

If you have information regarding the cause of the emergency or other potential hazards that could hinder or endanger emergency response personnel, contact the nearest emergency warden in the orange vests.

Upon completion of evacuation, establish if all team members have been accounted for. Report any missing team members to an emergency responder (either an emergency warden wearing an orange vest, Campus Security Officer or any other uniformed responder, e.g. fire or police).
