Dr. Eldon Smith, emeritus professor, Faculty of Medicine, received the Grant MacEwan Lifetime Achievement Award for his esteemed medical and academic career spanning more than 30 years. This award honours an individual who has made significant contributions and brought recognition to the community, and has improved the quality of life for citizens.

Killam Annual Professorships awarded

Three Faculty of Medicine members have been awarded the prestigious Killam Annual Professorship.

Drs. Bill Ghali, Susan Lees-Miller and Keith Sharkey are Killam Annual Professors who have demonstrated excellence in research and teaching for 10 years or more, while serving their academic discipline and their community outside the university. Recipients are nominated by the dean of their faculty and selected through peer review.

Cy Frank to receive The Order of The University of Calgary

Dr. Cy  Frank will be one of five exceptional individuals to become a member of The Order of The University of Calgary during the 2013 May and June convocation ceremonies. Individuals who are recognized with The Order of The University of Calgary have a history of distinguished service to the university.

Mitchell receives commendation from British Transport Police

The British Transport Police (BTP) Area Commander has recently commended Dr. Ian Mitchell for his swift action during a train accident in Rannoch Moor, Scotland in August 2012. Mitchell, a professor in the Department of Paediatrics and Director of the Office of Medical Bioethics, was on the train when it struck two people as they attempted to cross the tracks.

First Canadian to receive U.S.-based award

Dr. Doug Mahoney is the first Canadian to receive the Young Investigator Award from the Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy. The U.S. non-profit foundation supports research in cell- and gene-based therapies for the treatment of cancer.  Mahoney is a new recruit at the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute, a medical research institute at the University of Calgary dedicated to health issues involving children and mothers. He moved to Calgary in July to establish a lab to study oncolytic viruses for the treatment of childhood cancers.

Calgary Stampede honours 100 Outstanding Albertans

Since 2005, the Western Legacy Awards have recognized individuals and organizations for their outstanding contributions to the promotion of western values and preservation of western heritage within the community.

In celebration of the Calgary Stampede’s Centennial, the 2012 Western Legacy Awards honoured 100 Outstanding Albertans who have promoted western hospitality, pride of place, integrity and commitment to community. Four of the honourees have ties to the Faculty of Medicine: Dr. Abdul Rahman, Dr. Greg Powell, Dr. Robert Church and Mrs. Ann McCaig.

CAG honours outstanding teaching and research achievements

Each year the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology (CAG) recognizes the outstanding teaching and research achievements of its members through the prestigious CAG Research and Education Awards. Three of the six award recipients for 2013 are from the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Medicine.

Faculty members honoured by Killam Trust

Three medicine faculty members are being recognized by the Killam Trust organization for their outstanding leadership contributions.

The Killam Research Leader Award, awarded to Dr. Cy Frank, is presented to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to research, is an acknowledged international leader, and has earned distinction for themselves and for the university.  The Killam Interdisciplinary Research Prize has been awarded to Dr. Richard Frayne and colleagues in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the development and leadership of interdisciplinary research collaborations. The Killam Award for Leadership in Teaching, awarded to Dr. Sylvain Coderre, recognizes outstanding contributions to leadership in university teaching.  Coderre is a professor in the Department of Medicine and a member of the Division of Gastroenterology. 

Faculty members honoured by AMA

The AMA is honouring seven Faculty of Medicine members in recognition of their distinguished service, long-standing service and long-term membership.  Dr. Ian Lange and Dr. Eldon Smith have been awarded the AMA Medal for Distinguished Service for their outstanding personal contributions to the medical profession and to the people of Alberta, and for raising the standards of medical practice.  Dr. Chip Doig, Dr. Ron Garnett, Dr. David Hogan and Dr. Daniel McGowan have been awarded the AMA Long-Service Award, recognizing their contributions of knowledge, skill and time to the advancement of the profession. The distinction of Member Emeritus, which recognizes significant contributions to the medical profession, seniority and long-term membership with the AMA, has been awarded to Dr. J. Paul Ryan.

Hildebrand receives Andrew J. Weiland Medal

The American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) has named Dr. Kevin Hildebrand as the 2012 recipient of the  Andrew J. Weiland Medal for Outstanding Research in Hand Surgery.  The medal is awarded annually to a mid-career researcher dedicated to advancing patient care in the field of hand surgery.  The medal recognizes and supports outstanding research in hand surgery in order to continue the vision of hand surgeon and researcher, Dr. Andrew Weiland.

Faculty members inducted as CAHS Fellows

The Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) will induct three members of the Faculty of Medicine as Fellows this fall. Dr. Brenda Hemmelgarn, Dr. Todd Anderson and Dr. Subrata Ghosh will be inducted into the academy for their demonstration of leadership, creativity, distinctive competencies and a commitment to advance academic health science.  The CAHS recognizes individuals of great accomplishment and achievement in the academic health sciences in Canada. The academy provides timely, informed and unbiased assessments of urgent issues affecting the health of Canadians.

Proud elected as a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada

In recognition of his widespread research accomplishments and extensive contributions to Canadian intellectual life, David Proud, PhD, has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. The fellowship is considered the highest honour that can be attained by scholars, artists and scientists in Canada.

PhD student awarded prestigious Vanier scholarship

Faculty of Medicine graduate student Robin Walker was recently awarded the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS) in recognition of her research and academic achievements. The scholarship was created to attract and retain world-class doctoral students and to establish Canada as a global centre of excellence in research and higher learning.

Casault shines as a physician leader of tomorrow

For the second consecutive year, a University of Calgary Faculty of Medicine student is the recipient of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) Award for Young Leaders. Colin Casault, a third-year medical student is being recognized for his leadership in advancing medical student issues at various levels of government and his invaluable contributions to the development of student-run educational initiatives at the University of Calgary.

Since the inception of the 10,000 Citation Club award in 2010, six faculty members have been recognized for reaching this exceptional achievement. Jos Eggermont, PhD, is the latest addition to the prestigious list.

The Citation Classic award, also introduced in 2010, is similarly extraordinary. Created for faculty members who have had a single manuscript cited over 1,000 times, both Dr. Todd Anderson and Dr. George Wyse have achieved this milestone.

Physician Achievement Review Program recognized by RCPSC

The office of Continuing Medical Education and Professional Development (CME and PD) at University of Calgary, led by  Jocelyn Lockyer, Claudio Violato and their partners at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA), Dr.  Trevor Theman and Mr. John Swiniarski, has been selected to receive one of three 2012 Royal College Accredited CPD Provider Innovation Awards for the development of the Physician Achievement Review Program (PAR).

Paul Kubes receives the 2012 CSI - Hardy Cinader Award

The Canadian Society of Immunology (CSI) has awarded Dr. Paul Kubes the Bernhard (Hardy) Cinader Award. The award is named in honor of Dr. Hardy Cinader, a member of a small group of immunologists generally credited for “founding” immunology in Canada in the 1960s.

In 2012, as Queen Elizabeth II celebrates the 60th anniversary of her accession to the throne, many deserving Canadians will be recognized for their contributions to Canada.  Mayi Arcellana-Panlilio, PhD, is being recognized for her many years of community work with the Asian Heritage Foundation, whose vision is to create a society that is inclusive and reflective of all cultures.  Dr. Tom Noseworthy will be awarded the prestigious medal by virtue of his membership in the Order of Canada.

The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) along with its sponsor, Canada Health Infoway, has announced the award recipients for the CHEC-CESC Virtual Patient Challenge 2011. Carly Glasner, a family medicine resident, and her faculty advisor, Dr. David Topps, have won second prize for authoring “Poppy Gone: A Virtual Prenatal Patient.”

The PCA recognizes individuals or groups who make exceptional contributions to society in the field of voluntary, educational and professional work. 

Researcher wins Centrum award

Researcher Raylene Reimer’s work linking the impact a mother’s diet has on the future health of her children has earned her the Centrum Foundation New Scientist Award for Outstanding Research. The award recognizes a member of the Canadian Nutrition Society who has made an outstanding contribution to research in nutrition within the preceding five years and who received their last academic degree within the last 15 years.

Snyder Institute's Dr. Paul Beck wins international award

Dr. Yan Shi to receive CSI New Investigator Award

University of Calgary researchers win national accolades

Glen Armstrong, PhD, will share the Brockhouse Canada Prize for Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Engineering with colleagues from the University of Calgary and University of Alberta for their ground-breaking work in glycobiology that is leading to the development of more effective vaccines, drug therapies and techniques to combat antibiotic resistance.

Medical student recognized for work in Global Health field

Homeless Project earns Student Award in Social Accountability

The 2011 winners of the Faculty of Medicine Student Award in Social Accountability are Aravind Ganesh and Dave Campbell for their work helping the homeless, marginalized and under-served of Calgary.  The two medical students, in collaboration with the Calgary Drop-In and Rehab Centre, designed, developed and implemented a mental health screening tool – a project that will form a database for scholars in Alberta and Canada to address the many issues of the homeless.

Ross recognized for contributions to diabetes community

Dr. Stuart Ross has been awarded the Dr. Gerald S. Wong Service Award by the Canadian Diabetes Association in recognition of his significant contributions to the diabetes community. The award was established in 1994 to honour the memory of Dr. Gerald S. Wong, an advocate of the highest standard in diabetes care and education.

Dr. Doug Wilson receives Distinguished Service Award

Dr. Doug Wilson is the recipient of this year’s Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) Distinguished Service Award. The award has only been presented three times (including Dr Wilson) to a member who has served the Society with distinction and worked for more than ten to fifteen years in an exemplary fashion in their practice and collaboratively with the Society.

University of Calgary researchers were celebrated at the annual Alberta Science and Technology Leadership (ASTech) Foundation Awards Gala this weekend for their outstanding achievements and scientific innovations. The foundation presented five researchers, including Gerald Zamponi, Department Head, Physiology & Pharmacology, with awards for their ability to bring groundbreaking research and scientific discovery to their fields and make important contributions to society and the economy of Alberta.

Neuroscience Grad Wins Governor General’s Gold Medal Award

Dustin Anderson is the winner of this year’s Governor General’s Gold Medal Award at the doctoral level. This is one of the most prestigious awards that a student in a Canadian educational institution can receive.

Faculty member wins RAZCER award

Corinne Doll is one of five Canadian radiation oncologists to receive a RAZCER Award for novel studies of radiation-drug interactions that have the potential to either protect normal tissues or sensitize tumours, and thus to enhance the effectiveness of radiation therapy for cancer patients.

8 teams receive funding in ETG Competition

The proposals for the Emerging Team Grant (ETG) competition have been evaluated. Each proposal was reviewed by two reviewers and then discussed by the full review panel. The panel was diverse, with representation from all four CIHR pillars and included faculty outside of Medicine and the University of Calgary. Dr. Kamala Patel, Chair of the ETG Review Committee, is delighted to report that 8 of the 19 teams have been selected for funding.

Researcher wins prestigious prize

Dr. Marja Verhoef, Canada’s only research chair in complementary medicine, has been awarded the $250,000 Dr. Rogers Prize for Excellence in Complementary and Alternative Medicine. The purpose of the Dr. Rogers Prize is to highlight the important contributions of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) to health care by rewarding the pioneers who have made significant contributions in the field.

Faculty members to receive 10,000 Citation Club award

At the Celebration of Excellence event in February 2010, the Faculty of Medicine Awards & Recognition Committee introduced the 10,000 Citation Club. The award honours faculty members whose entire body of work over their career has accumulated more than 10,000 citations. Over the course of their careers, less than 0.1% of researchers would accumulate 10,000 citations, making being a recipient of this award an exceptional achievement.

Zochodne awarded Wolfe Research Prize

In recognition of his outstanding research in the area of peripheral neuropathy, Dr. Doug Zochodne has been awarded the American Neurological Association’s (ANA) Wolfe Research Prize for Investigators Identifying New Causes or Novel Treatments of Axonal Peripheral Neuropathy.

Fox awarded RCPSC Program Director of the Year

Dr. Joel Fox is the proud recipient of the 2011 Program Director of the Year Award. Fox is one of two recipients of the annual award chosen by the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). The award honours a program director who has demonstrated a commitment to enhancing residency education as evidenced by innovation and impact beyond his/her program. This year there were 28 nominees.

Hasan wins Alton Ochsner Award

The Selection Committee of the Alton Ochsner Award Relating Smoking and Disease is honored to present its 26th Annual Award to Dr. Shabih Hasan. This award, comprised of a cash prize, medallion and a scroll, is presented to one or more physicians or scientists whose research findings have had a major impact on the overall knowledge and the medical practice that has linked cigarette smoking to disease.

MacQueen named 2011 Douglas Utting Award winner

Dr. Glenda MacQueen has been named the recipient of 2011 Douglas Utting Award, given to an individual, working in Canada, who has made a significant contribution to the study, understanding or treatment of depressive disorders.

Hollenberg awarded Royal Society of Canada McLaughlin Medal

Established in 1978, through the generosity of the R. Samuel McLaughlin Foundation, the Royal Society of Canada awards the McLaughlin Medal in recognition of distinguished achievement in medical sciences in Canada. Dr. Morley Hollenberg was selected as the award recipient for 2011.

Faculty member wins career achievement award

The first winner of the Canadian Society of Microbiologists (CSM) Murray Award is Dr. George Chaconas from the Faculty of Medicine, who was chosen by the Awards Committee from a very prestigious slate of candidates. The CSM Award is the Society's premier award for senior researchers. After several recent name changes, the CSM Executive has decided to permanently name the award in honour of the Murray family. Professor R.G.E. Murray and his father E.G.D Murray had a seminal role in the genesis of the CSM, and both had storied careers in microbiology.

Two members of the Faculty of Medicine have been elected into the prestigious Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS).  Dr. Samuel Wiebe and Dr. Chris Mody will be inducted into the Academy at the CAHS Annual General Meeting in Ottawa in September 2011.

Faculty member named as 2011 research scholar

The American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Research Foundation has announced its 2011 research scholars who promise to make significant strides in the field of gastrointestinal research. Of the four winners, the Faculty of Medicine’s Dr. Carla Coffin is the lone Canadian.

Med student earns Young Leaders Award

The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) Award for Young Leaders is given in celebration of the efforts of young physician leaders of tomorrow for their efforts today.  Dave Campbell, an undergraduate student at the Faculty of Medicine is being hailed as a leader who makes a difference in the lives and health of the underserved, and in demonstrating exceptional leadership in both community service and research.

AFMC Award for Exemplary Contribution to Faculty Development

Each year, the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) chooses a recipient of the AFMC Award for Exemplary Contribution to Faculty Development in Canada, an award established to recognize an individual or a group in Canada who has made exceptional contribution in this area.  For 2011, AFMC has chosen to recognize the University of Calgary’s Dr. Lara Cooke.

FMC Staff Association Outstanding Clinician Award 2010

Dr. Paul Beck is one outstanding clinician.  No, that’s not just his patients talking, it’s the Foothills Medical Centre Medical Staff Association, who awarded Beck with the Foothills Hospital Outstanding Clinician Award for 2010. The award is given in recognition of outstanding commitment to the patients, staff and students at the hospital as well as to the community.

Celebrating top achievements in Canadian health research

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Canadian Medical Association Journal are acknowledging the top achievements in Canadian health research that have had a significant impact on health, health care and health research.  For the second year, a peer-review panel of Canadian and international experts selected the winners based on the considerable impact of their work on the health and wellbeing of Canadians and others worldwide.  Several members of the University of Calgary, Faculty of Medicine are amongst those acknowledged.

Wycliffe-Jones honoured with resident award

The Canadian Association of Interns and Residents (CAIR) is honouring Dr. Keith Wycliffe-Jones as the recipient of the Dr. Derek Puddester Award for Resident Well Being.

Dr. Keith Wycliffe-JonesWycliffe-Jones, program director for the Department of Family Medicine, is humbled by the honour. “Receiving this award is a wake-up call to me, in taking on this position in family medicine, to recognize just how important resident health and well-being is to a successful and positive experience for all residents in our program.”

Professor Emeritus to receive RCPSC national honorary award

The Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) introduced the Duncan Graham Award in 1969 to honour individuals for their outstanding, lifelong contribution to medical education.  Dr. Henry Mandin, Professor Emeritus, is only the fourth Faculty of Medicine member to receive the national honorary award.

New head of Department of Medicine appointed

3rd Annual Celebration of Excellence

Med students given social accountability award

Eight medical students are being honoured with the first ever Faculty of Medicine Student Award in Social Accountability for their efforts in creating the student-run clinic at the Calgary Drop-In Centre.  The students make up the executive team behind the clinic, which provides more access to basic healthcare needs to Calgary's underprivileged population. 

Communications team wins several MarCom awards

Gambling disorder researcher honoured

The US National Center for Responsible Gaming (NCRG) has awarded  Dr. David Hodgins of the Faculty of Medicine with the  2010 Scientific Achievement Award in recognition of his significant contributions to the field of disordered gambling research.

Dr. Eldon Shaffer earns national gastroenterology award

Dr. Eldon Shaffer, professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Calgary has been recognized for his outstanding educational contributions by being chosen as the recipient the 2011 Canadian Association of Gastroenterology (CAG) Education Excellence Award.

Shaffer, who has held positions at the University of Calgary including division head (Gastroenterology) and associate dean (Clinical Affairs), is honoured yet humbled by the acknowledgement.  “CAG represents many fine, very-well trained specialists as consultants, educators and scientists.  The recognition also extends to gastroenterology here at the University, where our division and the GI Research Group have attained international prominence.”

I am pleased to announce Jordanna Heller has accepted the position of Director, Communications & Media Relations beginning October 1, 2010. 

Jordanna has been the Acting Director since July 9 and prior to that she was manager of media relations for the Faculty.  She started her media relations role in April 2008 and was responsible for enhancing the Faculty's national and international profile.

Killam Trust Research Awards given to three Faculty members

The University of Calgary has added four new Killam Trust programs, which are designed to include a broader scope of research as well as offering more potential awards and prizes for UCalgary researchers.  Dr. Cy Frank, Dr. Nigel Shrive and Dr. Greg Cairncross are the first recipients of two of the inaugural Killam Trust Research awards for 2010.

 

Dr. David Hogan awarded Prix d'Excellence

Dr. David Hogan, the Brenda Strafford Foundation Chair in Geriatric Medicine at University of Calgary, has won the 2010 Prix d'Excellence of the Year from the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada on the recommendation of the Advisory Committee for Region 1 (British Columbia, Alberta, Northwest Territories, Yukon).

The Prix d'Excellence recognizes members of the College with outstanding qualities who have made significant contributions as a medical educator or provided outstanding service to their community and to the Royal College over a long period of time. One or two of these awards are granted in each of the Regions of the College on an annual basis.
