Dr. Laura StintonThe Canadian Medical Association (CMA) Award for Young Leaders is given in celebration of the efforts of young physician leaders of tomorrow for their efforts today. Dr. Laura Stinton, a resident at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary has been tapped as one of the leaders of tomorrow, displaying all the attributes and performance characteristics of an outstanding clinician and medical researcher.
Stinton is no stranger to winning awards. In 2008, she was named the Rockyview General Hospital Internal Medicine Senior Resident of the Year, and in 2007 she received the Canadian Association of Professors of Medicine/Canadian Society of Clinical Iinvestigation Resident Research Award. Stinton’s feelings on winning the CMA Award are that of humility and surprise.
“It is an achievement I did not think would be possible among all the great residents doing research across Canada. The nomination alone was an honor, but winning is truly unbelievable.” She is especially thankful for the mentorship from Dr. Marvin Fritzler who has been an indescribable support to her during her medical career.
Winning awards with such high prestige can greatly impact one’s medical career and Stinton says this reinforces her passion of having a positive impact on the health community. It also gives her added incentive and permission to follow the vision of combining research with clinical medicine in her medical career.
As a resident physician, Stinton works to do her best in all aspects of her career. Whether dealing with an individual patient and their family, consulting with other health practitioners or participating in a research project, she strives for excellence and endeavors to work hard, qualities that did not go unrecognized by the CMA. “I believe this dedication shows true leadership and contributes to making a difference in various areas within the field of medicine.”
The Canadian Medical Association will present Stinton with her medal during the CMA annual meeting in Niagara Falls in August 2010.
