Dr. Rick WardDr. Rick Ward has been named one of the Calgary Herald’s 20 Compelling Calgarians for 2009. The annual list is compiled to showcase Calgarians who excel in their fields and who make an impact on the local community.
Receiving his Doctor of Medicine in 1985, Ward, an Assistant Professor at the University of Calgary, has been active on national and international levels, advocating the importance of family medicine.
‘I believe really passionately about family medicine and the work we can do in the community to make a difference in people’s lives’.
Ward has been working with the government and its agencies to consider ways of increasing funding for family doctors. The absence of family doctors in the province is becoming more apparent and medical students are not drawn to fill those vacancies. Ward’s hope is there will be less emphasis on other specialties as family doctors are a top reason for improving the health of patients.*
Ward has served as President of the Alberta College of Family Physicians since 2008 and has been a partner at the Crowfoot Village Family Practice, a multidisciplinary clinic, since 1988.
