On the Move

Dr. Brent Scott appointed new director, Institute of Child and Maternal Health

Effective April 1, 2009, our Vice Dean, Dr. R. Brent Scott, will be leading the Institute for Child and Maternal Health (ICMH) as its new director.

Brent completed his MD at McGill University in 1976, then trained in general pediatrics at the University of Alberta. Later, with a Medical Research Council of Canada fellowship, he trained in pediatric gastroenterology at the Hospital for Sick Children, University of Toronto, where he also completed a Master of Science degree.

Brent joined the University of Calgary in 1982 as assistant professor of pediatrics in the Division of Paediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, Alberta Children’s Hospital. In 1998, he was appointed professor and Head, Department of Paediatrics, Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary; Head, Regional Clinical Department, Paediatrics, Calgary Health Region; and Chair in Paediatric Research, Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation. In 2006, he was acting director of the ICMH. Brent played a major role in the creation of the new Alberta Children’s Hospital.

In September 2007, Brent was appointed Vice Dean, Faculty of Medicine where he provided excellent service to the Faculty, especially with his work in revamping our budget process. He has always been a strong proponent of developing excellence in education and research to improve the provision of clinical care. Among Brent’s many awards are: the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR) Clinical Investigator Award, AHFMR Scholar Award, AHFMR Senior Scholar Award, the Faculty of Medicine’s Distinguished Service Award and the Alberta Children’s Hospital Medical Staff Association Award of Excellence.

Though Brent is leaving the position as Vice Dean, the Faculty of Medicine is very privileged to have him remain in a key leadership role as the director of ICMH. I believe his superior leadership, passion for child and maternal health and desire for excellence in research and clinical care will continue to shine in his new role. A search for a new Vice Dean will commence soon.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Brent Scott into his new role.

Tom Feasby, MD
Dean
Faculty of Medicine
