New director of Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta named

Dr. Todd Anderson is a Faculty of Medicine alumnusAlberta Health Services Calgary Zone, the University of Calgary Faculty of Medicine and the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta are very pleased to announce that Dr. Todd J. Anderson has been appointed as Zone Clinical Department Head and Faculty Department Head for the Department of Cardiac Sciences, and the Director of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta. The appointment is effective July 1, 2010.

Dr. Anderson was awarded his medical degree from the University of Calgary in 1985 before completing his residency in internal medicine in 1988, his clinical fellowship in cardiology in 1990, and his interventional fellowship in cardiology in 1991 at Foothills Medical Centre. In 1994, Dr. Anderson completed a research fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School.  

Dr. Anderson is a Professor of Cardiac Sciences and Medicine at the University of Calgary, a Senior Scholar of the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research and Chair of the Scientific Review Committee of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.  Dr. Anderson has been Division Chief of Cardiology at the University of Calgary since 2006 and is currently Co-lead of a major AHFMR province-wide team grant for the study of diastolic heart failure. On
January 1, 2010 Dr. Anderson was appointed as Acting Zone Clinical Department Head, Faculty Department Head and Acting Director of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta.

Dr. Anderson received the Young Investigator Award from the Canadian Cardiovascular Society in 1994 and in 2000 was selected among Canada’s Top 40 under 40.  An Instructor, initially at Harvard Medical School and since 1994 in Calgary, Dr. Anderson has received numerous teaching awards including the Calgary Medical Students' Association Gold Star or Letter for Excellence in teaching every year from 1998 to 2006.  

Dr. Anderson is an internationally recognized expert in the assessment and treatment of endothelial dysfunction as well as cardiovascular risk factors.  His 1995 article on the close relation of endothelial function in the human coronary and peripheral circulations has been cited almost 1,400 times and laid important groundwork in the area of non-invasive biomarkers for atherosclerosis.  In the same year, Dr. Anderson published an article in the New England Journal of Medicine on the effect of Cholesterol-Lowering and Antioxidant Therapy on Endothelium-Dependent Coronary Vasomotion, which has been cited almost 1,000 times by researchers around the globe. His current research interests are to study the effect of novel risk markers and their treatment on vascular function to better prevent and treat atherosclerotic heart disease.
