The Heritage Research Innovation Centre building, Foothills Campus, University of Calgary, is now home to a Distinguished Awards wall, honouring 39 current and former faculty members, with room for more to come. The Faculty of Medicine hosted a private event in late January to reveal the display.
The wall recognizes those who have won prestigious national and international awards since the founding of the Faculty of Medicine, including: the Order of Canada, Royal Society of Canada Fellowship, Canadian Academy of Health Sciences Fellowship, Gairdner Award, Canadian Institutes of Health Research Health Researcher of the Year, and several other major awards.
"Alberta is a global leader in innovation and discovery, and the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary plays a key role in our success. For over 40 years the faculty has produced world-class research, education and technology. My heartfelt congratulations to all of the award winners here today," said the Honourable Fred Horne, Alberta Minister of Health and Wellness.
The wall was unveiled by Dr. Tom Feasby, dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and Dru Marshall, provost and vice-president (academic), University of Calgary.
"It is important to me that we show our pride and appreciation for the hard work, initiative, service to society, and leadership our members demonstrate," said Dean Feasby. "Those whom we celebrate today are role models for the students and young academics whom we hope will emulate their examples. "
Guest speakers also included, Paul Kubes, PhD, CIHR Health Researcher of the Year for 2011 and director of the Calvin, Phoebe and Joan Snyder Institute for Chronic Diseases; Samuel Weiss, PhD, Gairdner International Science Award recipient and director of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute; and recent Order of Canada recipient neurosurgeon Dr. Garnette Sutherland.
